Benefits of membership

A common question asked by many Internet Service Providers is "why join FreeBIX", the reasons are many, some common ones are detailed below.

Reduction in Transit bandwidth usage

All traffic sent to another FreeBIX member travels across FreeBIX rather than via your transit bandwidth, thereby reducing the amount of expensive transit bandwidth usedfor BE access.

Improved speed of access

FreeBIX provides connections of up to 1000Mbit. Members can therefore exchange traffic with other FreeBIX members at gigabit speeds, which is extremely useful for automated peering services such as news peering or web proxy server peering.

Improved availability

By being a member of FreeBIX you provide yourself with additional routes to the connected sites, thereby increasing the resiliance of your connectivity into the BE infrastructure. The FreeBIX equipment is monitored and maintained 24 hours by 365 days a year, and so provides a reliable peering point.

Technical knowledge

For those ISPs who are unfamiliar with BGP and multi-homed routing FreeBIX provides an excellent ground for learning, the mailing list being a source of information, knowledge and wisdom from numerous ISPs around the country. The members will supply you with example configurations, help you debug any technical issues you have and generally provide a friendly atmosphere for working together.

Getting involved

Many FreeBIX members believe that purely being involved in an organsation such as FreeBIX is reason enough. Meeting with other companies within the same market area, andworking towards a common aim, is a worthwhile benefit in itself.

FreeBIX provides the following benefits to its members:

Reduction of upstream connectivity costs

One of the major costs involved in any internet related business today is that of upstream connectivity. Our infrastructure allows you to interconnect and exchange IP traffic (peer) directly with other FreeBIX members. This reduces the need to send your traffic through a bandwidth upstream provider. Exchange of IP traffic can occur at a national and international level.

Constant development

The FreeBIX team is professionally involved to extend and improve services for its members. Inline with recent developments FreeBIX introduced services like IPv6, multicast, closed user groups and Private Interconnections. We constantly strive to enlarge the number of potential peers and the potential peering benefits for our members by extending our services.
